General Issues of a Cooling Tower.

Not many realises the issues that can be caused from a simple traditional cooling tower system, or the everyday used air-conditioned in the building. This is not to alarm you but more of putting accross an awareness and some thoughts into some of the issues that was found through our experiences.

  • BIOLOGICAL GROWTH - Many species of microorganisms such as algae, bacteria and fungi can thrive in cooling tower water, favored by sunlight and organics. This will interfere heat transfer, blockage of piping and valves as well as threatening human health. Presence of Bacteria Induce Serious Hazards to Human Health such as “Legionnaires’ Disease“ 
  • CORROSION - Water contains dissolved oxygen and a variety of corrosive condensate, such as water tower sand particulate, gravel, dust, scale, microorganisms and other insoluble substances in the suspension of the heat exchanger surface. This will generate loose deposits, causing scale corrosion.
  • SCALLING - Scale is a hard deposit caused by the precipitation of mineral particles in water, which will settle in pipelines or on heat exchange surfaces. As water evaporates in a cooling tower, pure vapor is lost and the dissolved solids concentrate in the remaining water, which will continue and lead to scaling.
